CENTER BOOK GROUP AUGUST REVIEW - ELLA MINNOW PEA

  • 18  guests were in attendance at this month’s meeting, where the group celebrated the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Book Club. They enjoyed cake and discussed many of their past favorite selections.
  • This  month’s book selection was “Ella Minnow Pea” by Mark Dunn, a book  they first read 19 years ago.
  • “Ella Minnow Pea”  is an epistolary novel set on the fictional island of Nollop, situated off  the coast of South Carolina and home to the inventor of the pangram The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Brown Dog.  The islanders have erected a monument to honor their hero, now deceased, but one day a tile falls from the statue.  The leaders interpret the falling tile as a message from beyond the grave and the letter is banned from use.  On an island where the residents pride themselves on their love of language, this is seen as a tragedy and rebellion ensues.  The author, Mark Dunn, is a playwright and the book is a delight for lovers of language.
  • Response from the group was mixed, some loved it and a few thought it was nonsense      or boring.
